- this lesson will actually cover a chapter of the text. It will be 14 days long since at the high school math level units are normally a full chapter.

Lesson Title: Chapter 3 Perpendicular and Parallel Lines

Grade: 9-12

Content Area: Geometry

Lesson Length: Approximately 10 days

Phase 1: Reflect on Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge

What is my knowledge of technology? (TK)

My knowledge of the technology that will be used in this unit is very strong. I would be using the following items in this lesson: graphing calculators, SmartBoard, YouTube, PowerPoint, geometers sketchpad, and others. All of these different forms of technology I use off and on throughout the year when it comes to teaching and I feel that I can use any of these to their full educational ability.

I have an average understanding of the technology that I use in my classroom. I started using a new graphing calculator last year and learned along with my students. I have average knowledge of graphing calculators, software usage, availability and SMARTboard technology.

What is my knowledge of pedagogy? (PK)

I feel out of the three areas this would be my weakest but not by much. I am able to create diverse lessons that meet the needs of many different learners. My lessons normally include visual, auditory, spatial, and logical when you look at the multiple intelligence theory. I also use some hands on and discovery to help students learn new ideas. Finally, I also use the old method of stand and lecture with different levels of questioning being used.

I work with many struggling high school students. They lack the prior knowledge needed to learn advanced topics. Thus, I find myself using a lot of direct instruction to help the students address their deficiencies. I need to work harder to make connections for my students. They often ask the question, “When are we ever going to use this?” If I adopt a constructivist approach I will be able to paint the big picture of mathematics and encourage my students to think on their own.

What is my knowledge of the content? (CK)

I feel that I have a very strong background here. I have been teaching this content for the past 6-7 years and I am always looking for new ways to improve this and to work better at it. I feel that all of my different approaches and techniques that I use help to show that I have a very good knowledge of the content.

I have a strong understanding of Mathematics. I am always eager to learn more of my content area and as an adult I have found many mathematical concepts much more enjoyable then when I was a student.

Where do I see myself in the TPACK model?

I feel that I am at the TCK level if not at the TPACK level. I know that my technological and content knowledge are very strong. My weakness again would be my pedagogical at times. I think that when things go well my lessons would be at the TPACK level but I am always a little unsure of myself from time to time. In addition to this I feel that at times my pedagogical falls to a lower level since we have so much material to present for state standards and so little time to do so. Do to all of this we cut out some of the activities and things that would fall under strong pedagogical content.

I find myself in the TCK realm of the TPACK model. I have a strong understanding of content and an average understanding of technology. By adopting a constructivist approach with my students I feel that I will move toward the TPACK level.
